A daffodil in January, surely not in this weather! And the primulas are looking good too.

Waste Action Grant deadline approaches for Edinburgh Communities
Communities across Edinburgh are being urged to submit their applications to the City of Edinburgh Council for a Waste Action Grant as the deadline fast approaches. The upcoming deadline is Tuesday 9th February.
Grants are available to fund eco-friendly projects that will encourage more people in the Capital to reduce, reuse and recycle. Groups who are working to prevent litter in their local area are encouraged to apply.
A range of funding is available, from smaller grants of £50-£200 to larger grants of £500 – £2500.

Please support the new nature trail at Starbank Park
The Friends of Starbank Park are raising funds for this children’s nature trail, and we are already more than halfway to our target of £5200.
We are working with Victoria Primary School to create a Hans Christian Andersen-inspired nature trail that will feature statues of some of his most well-loved characters, including the Little Mermaid, the Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina and the Snow Queen. Each story will have its own area beside the path, with log seats for children and insect friendly flowers and bushes. Hans Christian Anderson had a connection to Trinity. He lodged round the corner from Starbank Park at 73 East Trinity Road and visited James Young Simpson of chloroform fame, just across Laverockbank Road from the Park in 1847 so he might even have visited Starbank.
We are now asking for your support and help with donations via the MyParkScotland crowdfunding site http://www.mypark.scot/projects/childrens-nature-trail. As Ian Goodman, of MyParkScotland, said: “The Children’s Trail is an inspired project which will benefit children and visitors for Edinburgh and beyond. …Your donation, no matter how large or small will help bring this project to life.”
Nature trail started!
A good turn-out this morning, despite the dull, grey morning. We’ve made a good start to the nature trail and we’ve picked up even more leaves and weeds. The primulas are still providing a bit of colour, especially valuable on a dull day. And the council has started painting the railings, a huge improvement even with only the undercoat.

Snow, almost enough for sledging
First snow of the winter last night. There was almost enough for sledging!

A robin, flowers, sunshine and ice
A fine winter’s morning in the park. The sun even shone and there are lots of flowers out, including primulas, a clematis and Puschkinia Russian Snowdrops! We did yet more tidying, organising the compost and started on bird box assembly, all supervised by very bossy robin.

New Year Gardening and Bird Boxes
It was a cold, windy but fair morning, so pretty good by the standards of 2016. We’d a good turn out of volunteers, all weeding, tidying and pruning.

And special thanks to Sinclair Campbell for cutting the wood for the bird boxes, which will be assembled in the next few weeks.
Coffee and Christmas lunch and some gardening
The grass and paths are now almost clear of leaves as we managed to squeeze in a bit of gardening before coffee. It was sunny and easily warm enough for coffees in the Park. 19 volunteers followed up with Christmas Lunch at the Old Chain Pier. Lunch was excellent: good food, excellent service, fine views and mercifully few photos.

Happy Christmas TCV and thank you for your help
TCV’s team came at short notice today and did a huge amount of work. They are a great team and good to be with. They cleared tons of leaves from the bottom half of the park and the grass will be able to breathe again!

The end of a hard day. The team collected at least 20 tonne bags of leaves

Hardly a leaf in sight!
