Why do the weeds grow so fast!

The petals are falling off the cherry trees giving a lovely pink carpet.

Carpet of petals

Not a bad morning with lots of edging, weeding and general tidying.  Stuart has done a sterling job scraping the weeds off the bottom path.

Many thanks,  Julie for a really helpful demonstration of rose pruning.  That will keep us busy!

Volunteers from Martin Currie Ltd and 600 plants!

A wonderful day in the park.  Five volunteers from Martin Currie Investment Management Limited came for the day and, despite the damp morning, we had 13  Friends of Starbank Park too.  The council delivered 600 plants at 10.00am and the result was huge progress.  All 600 plants were planted, with rosemary, lavender and box hedging in four central beds in the top of the park and 100 geraniums in the new border at the north wall beside Starbank Road.  The team from Martin Currie were terrific, working really hard all day, despite increasingly heavy rain in the afternoon. We took a huge step forward today.  Many thanks to Ritchie and Jen from the Council and the whole Martin Currie team.

Cherry Trees and Weeding

Another busy morning weeding and tidying in the park, amongst the fantastic cherry trees.  Everything is growing well, including the weeds!  We cleared a load chickweed in the SW corner this morning.  Some of it was so thick it was like lifting turf, and its only a few weeks since we last weeded there.

New Paths for Easter!

The paths have been finished in time for rolling Easter eggs!  And the grass on the bank has been cut!

Many thanks to the City of Edinburgh Council and their contractors.  Starbank Park has been improved hugely by the new paths.

Weeding and Paths

It was a busy day at the park with gardening restricted to the northern half of the park because of the resurfacing work on the paths.

Resurfacing

But we did get a lot done, particularly on the terrace border where the thistles took a serious beating!

Tidy again

Everything is growing

The paths are progressing well and they’ll be finished in a week or so.  That will make a huge difference.

We took out loads more annual weeds but there are still lots to remove!  It’s been a good spring for weeds and, it would appear, for frogs!

The park is looking good.  The fruit trees we planted earlier in the year have all taken, the primulas look terrific and the first flower is on our new magnolia tree.

Resurfacing the Paths!

Brilliant news!  The Council is resurfacing the paths.  New paths will make the park safer, more accessible and more attractive.  Many thanks to all in the Council who made this happen.

Loads of Progress

Wednesday morning weather was pretty good in February and March so we got loads done:

  • Planted shrubs, herbaceous plants and annuals
  • Edged all borders in the garden section of the park
  • Prepared a new 2 foot wide border for the length of the north wall for spring planting
  • And we have weeded and weeded!

Dry but Cool

Wednesday was a dry, but grey and cool morning, sandwiched between two awful days and it saw a good deal of weeding, pruning and tidying.  The paths are progressing too, with preparation nearly complete and work starting on the path edges.  It looks as if there has been an invasion by moles!

New Paths

Primulas and daffodils still look great, fresh shoots are showing on the herbaceous plants and trees and shrubs are coming into bud.

And there were 13 volunteers and we got through a load of tidying, mainly hoeing and weeding. Also, thanks to George, who took away a load of gardening rubbish, which seemed to please the robin.
