We’ve started our fernery

Last month, Friends of Starbank Park were awarded a Community Grant to build a fernery by Keep Scotland Beautiful/Tesco. We’ve really got moving.  The area has been cleared by moving quite a few shrubs and daffodils to elsewhere in the park.  And we planted our first fern this morning, with some very distinguished help!  It is a tree fern, Dicksonia Antarctica, which we were kindly donated.  It’s all very exciting, especially as we’ve started to use our own compost!

Friday progress and a bad joke!

Another magnificent day.  We finished off blocking the main gaps in the hedges, did a chunk of tidying on the terrace and planted some cuttings.  Not bad for a day off!IMG_4890 1IMG_4891 1IMG_4898 1

The hedge should fill the gaps without the need for more plants but the cuttings are a good insurance.

I can’t resist inserting another photo of the primulas which are amazing.IMG_4897 1

And I can’t resist a bad joke.

Warm and calm!

Great morning at the park, sunny, warm and no wind!  Spring is bursting forth with lots more daffodils out, a magnificent show of primulas and the witch hazels adding colour too. We’ve dug over the east border and it’s looking good.

There has been a lot of damage to the star this winter and we are blocking up the gaps in the terrace hedge to reduce the animal traffic through the hedge, down to the star.  We hope it makes a difference.
